On February 1st news came out of a party at an Airbnb in Toronto which turned deadly during an unauthorized party. Three young men were killed and two were injured. In response to this tragic event Airbnb is running a pilot project which will ban Airbnbs from being rented to persons under the age of 25 within a yet to be determine radius of their primary residence.
The issue of unauthorized parties has been consistently identified as a major concern for the hosts and has been clearly identified as a safety concern by their neighbors and communities as a whole. Often the hosts of these Airbnb properties are not present at the residence while it is being rented out. This is true for many of these types of short-term property rental businesses. This has led to damage to property far beyond what is easily recoverable through a damage deposit and cleaning fee. Not to mention this can be people’s primary residences which can leave families feeling violated with such willful destruction.
Here at Nash Technologies Inc we are always looking at ways to bring together risk management expertise and cutting-edge internet of things (IoT) solutions to solve issues affecting our community. After researching how big the problem of unauthorized parties is for these short-term home rental hosts, we put our heads together and found two ways we feel we could assist.
Imagine an economical sensor box in the home you are renting out Airbnb or one of the several other platforms, which can instantly detect the following and send an immediate alert to your phone;
- When noise levels surpass a set level that would arise from a party or even just loud music.
- When someone is smoking a cigarette.
Imagine if a host would know immediately if people were violating the no smoking or no party term of the rental agreement! Costly damage to property could be averted. Hosts would not receive complaints from the neighbors, as the host could call the renters before a neighbor had a chance to call the police. Communities would feel safer without the draw of wild parties and the negative consequences that come from heavy alcohol and drug use, which often go hand and hand with these parties.
